Traffic

Is traffic, especially car traffic, restricted during 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships Zurich?

Yes, traffic in the Zurich area is severely restricted during the race days. Avoid the area as much as possible. Avoid unnecessary journeys and, if possible, travel outside the event times. Leave your car at home whenever possible and use alternative means of transport such as your bike or public transport. After the end of the race, or from 7 p.m. at the latest, access is again possible for all road users without restriction.

How will the Zurich 2024 World Championships impact traffic in the city of Zurich and the affected municipalities?

The roads on which the cycling races will take place will have to be closed to traffic for safety reasons.
In order to maintain the traffic system, traffic will be controlled on a large scale.
The effects are described in detail in the traffic concepts of the city and canton of Zurich.
The cantonal police have been approaching all municipalities since spring 2024 to discuss the traffic concept and have the agreed measures confirmed.

On which days do route closures apply?

The 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships Zurich will take place from Saturday, 21 September to Sunday, 29 September 2024. The route closures will be regulated by the traffic regulations. They vary depending on the race day and race programme. You can use the canton's GIS browser to check for yourself whether and when you are affected at home, on the road or at your place of work. Your municipality may provide additional information on its website.

What types of closures are there?

In order to ensure the race and safety on the course on the individual days, the roads to be travelled will be closed. A safety distance must be maintained before and after the athletes.
The roads will be closed for the training sessions under the same conditions as for the races.
To ensure the safety of the athletes at all times, barriers must be erected, diversions signalled and vehicles obstructing traffic removed. The route to be used must be secured one hour (60 minutes) before the start of the race, after which it will be handed over to the organiser.
There are two closure systems:
Full closure: 1 hour before the start until 30 minutes after the last rider (applies to the time trial courses as well as the City Circuit, formerly Circuit Normal). This system is necessary if riders repeatedly ride the course at relatively close intervals and over a longer period of time.
Rolling closure: 1 hour before the first rider until after the broom wagon has passed through (used on approach routes from the starting locations of road races). This system is possible if the race route is not used again before and after the "field".
For emergencies, the tracks can always be crossed and driven on in an emergency. Both lead to an interruption/neutralisation of the race or to the race being abandoned.

Can the official routes be used by private motorised traffic during the races?

No.

Is traffic already affected before the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships Zurich?

In principle no. However, isolated impairments due to the construction of infrastructure are possible.

Where do the racecourses pass through and when are they closed?

The racecourses vary depending on the race day and race programme. You can use the canton's GIS browser to check for yourself whether and when you are affected at home, on the road or at your place of work.

Itschnacher junction

How will traffic on the Forchautostrasse be organised? How will a traffic collapse at the access road be prevented?

  • The concept for the management of the Itschnach junction has been developed and defined by the cantonal police in collaboration with the TBA.
  • Additional measures to reduce the volume of traffic on the Forchautostrasse include large-scale bypasses and diversions in the entire catchment area as well as numerous, coordinated communication measures with information on the entire traffic system during the major event.

Will there be an access permit for driving on the A52 Forchautostrasse? And if so, where can this be obtained?

  • From 25 to 29 September 2024, the city of Zurich will only be accessible via the Forchautostrasse A52 during the closing times (06:00 to 19:00).
  • By car, you can only reach the city of Zurich (eastern area) via the A52 Forchautostrasse, which will be controlled and managed at the Itschnacher junction/Zumikon on these race days.
  • You will therefore need an access permit. Please note that delays are to be expected even with an access permit.
  • You can download the access permit after completing an online form: https://www.zh.ch/de/sport-kultur/sport/sport-grossevents/rad-und-para-cycling-wm-2024/eine-zufahrtsbewilligung-anfordern.html
  • Please read the instructions on the website carefully before completing the application form.
  • All persons wishing to drive across the Itschnacher junction require an access permit.

But I absolutely have to go into town because I have an urgent appointment. What should I do?

During the Road World Championships, everyone should consider whether they really need to travel to the city by private vehicle from Wednesday 25 to Sunday 29 September. If you want to go to the other side of Zurich, you can take the Meilen-Horgen ferry to the other side of the lake and travel via the A3 motorway.

Anyone who nevertheless needs to drive into the city by car via Forchstrasse during the competition days, for example to visit a doctor or hospital, can register for an access permit on the canton's website.

What happens if I arrive at the Itschnach junction without an access permit?

Anyone without an access permit will be stopped at the Küsnachter- /Forch- /Dorfstrasse junction in Zumikon between 6 am and 7 pm during the competition days. The Forchautostrasse is expected to have two lanes from the Forch entrance to the Zumiker junction. One lane will be reserved for vehicles with a licence, the other for those without. An initial checkpoint will be set up on site to ensure that drivers are queuing correctly.

If you do not have a permit behind your windscreen, you can turn off at the Zumiker junction in the direction of Itschnach or Waltikon. You must then turn at the roundabout in the centre of Waltikon.

Emergencies and health institutions

Will the hospitals remain accessible?

Can the fire brigade move out?

Yes, the fire brigades have special deployment plans for the duration of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships Zurich. Emergencies have priority at all times.

How do I get to my doctor / my physiotherapy practice / my pharmacy?

This depends on the local conditions. Leave your car at home whenever possible. You can use the canton's GIS browser to check how best to get to your destination. Your municipality may provide additional information on its website.

Plan more time for travelling by public transport. You can find your best connections in the ZVV timetable.

How will the S-Bahn (ZVV) operate?

  • S-Bahn operations are not restricted. Transport capacity will also be expanded where possible.

Is the Meilen-Horgen ferry in operation?

  • The ferry is an important transport measure, mainly to relieve the motorised private transport system during the race days.
  • The ferry service is in operation on all race days. The landing stages are always accessible.
  • During the time trial races (21-24 September 2024), the Meilen landing stage can only be reached from the east (from Rapperswil).

How will VBZ, ZVO, VBG and Postbus bus services operate in the affected area?

  • During the cycle races, tram and bus services are restricted in various regions of the city of Zurich and the canton of Zurich.
  • The race routes and times are different on each race day, and so are the effects on public transport. The affected lines will be diverted, run on shortened routes or cancelled: https://freizeit.zvv.ch/de/freizeit-und-events/freizeitkarte/rad-wm.html
  • Once the route closures have been lifted in the evening, bus services will return to normal.
  • The detailed plans for public transport are expected to be finalised by spring.

How can public transport travellers find out about the changes?

  • From around mid-August, it should be possible to check connections in the online timetable for the period 21-29 September 2024.
  • All details about the changes to public transport can be found on the ZVV website. Please also note the information provided by VBZ on site during the World Cycling Championships.
  • To plan your journey, we recommend that you consult the online timetable on vbz.ch, zvv.ch or in the ZVV app shortly beforehand. The online timetable will be updated at least six weeks before the start of the World Cycling Championships.

Non-motorised traffic
How and where can pedestrians and cyclists cross the route?

  • Managed crossing points have been planned for pedestrians and cyclists at various locations.
  • If the course of the race allows it, they can cross the race route in an organised manner, e.g. after passing the field in the road race.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists are responsible for crossing at points that are not secured
  • Please pay attention to the course of the race and follow the instructions of the course safety team. Please note that there may be delays depending on the course of the race.
  • Cycling is the best means of transport for travelling in and around Zurich during the race days. When crossing the race course, you must dismount and use the crossing points for pedestrians.

Daily life

Can I go shopping normally?

This depends on the local conditions. Avoid unnecessary journeys and, if possible, travel outside the event times. Whenever possible, leave your car at home and use alternative means of transport, such as your bike. You can use the canton's GIS browser to check how best to get to your destination. Shopping facilities are available. Access routes are sometimes restricted during road closures. Your municipality may provide additional information on its website.

How can pupils and teachers reach the school during the major event?

  • Pupils travelling on foot or by bike can also cross the race course at various crossing points during the races (depending on the course of the race).
  • Commuter trains and the Forch railway are not restricted.
  • The bus connections in the individual municipalities and areas have been revised and adapted as part of the transport measures.
  • The adjusted timetables will be communicated via the existing public transport platforms.
