Cycling tradition Zurich

“Metzgeten”, smoky nights and a surprise world champion. Zurich has already seen great things in cycling. The legendary Züri-Metzgete, a European classic cycle race held annually, had cycling fans flocking to the streets. In the Hallenstadion, the “temple of strong calf muscles”, professional cyclists - simply unthinkable today – conducted their laps in cigarette smoke and beer fumes at the Six Days of Zurich. And in 1946, the last time the World Cycling Road Championships were held in Zurich, a local took all the favourites by surprise. Hans Knecht from Albisrieden won the title in a memorable race.
