In 2024, all of Zurich will get on their bikes. From Saturday, 21 September, to Sunday, 29 September, the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships will make history in the city and canton. For the first time, male and female para-athletes, elite riders and juniors will compete for the coveted rainbow jerseys at the same Championships. Individual time trials, team competitions and finally the elite road races will bring the Championships to the people and to the thrilling finale at Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich, including a big public party. “Metzgeten”, smoky nights and a surprise world champion. Zurich has already seen great things in cycling. The legendary Züri-Metzgete, a European classic cycle race held annually, had cycling fans flocking to the streets. In the Hallenstadion, the “temple of strong calf muscles”, professional cyclists - simply unthinkable today – conducted their laps in cigarette smoke and beer fumes at the Six Days of Zurich. And in 1946, the last time the World Cycling Road Championships were held in Zurich, a local took all the favourites by surprise. Hans Knecht from Albisrieden won the title in a memorable race.
