The bicycle at the centre

The 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling World Road Championships Zurich put cycling at the centre of attention. We will all benefit from this - and from the various accompanying measures to promote cycling and the bicycle. The city and canton are committed to a sustainable Championship that will have a broad impact on public health, the promotion of sport, inclusion and integration, transport and traffic and the reputation of Zurich way beyond the race days. Great routes through the canton, the finish area at Sechseläutenplatz and the fan zones guarantee a bike festival in the midst of great scenic backdrops such as the old town and the lake.

Inclusion and integration at all levels

People with disabilities encounter many obstacles in everyday life that make it difficult or impossible for them to participate in some public activities.

To make their challenges visible, they also need to be seen. In this respect, the Para-cycling Road World Championships offer a unique platform for inclusion and integration. Athletes with a disability can compete in front of a large audience.

Conversely, the Road Cycling World Championships should also be accessible and attractive to spectators with disabilities. At Zurich 2024, everyone will be involved.

TOGETHER WE RIDE!

Passion for cycling

Footballers, they say, regard their sport as the most beautiful pastime in the world. Cyclists live out their passion even more seriously because they can combine sporting activity, health promotion and mobility in one activity. For many, cycling is a passion, a vocation and the greatest pleasure all in one go. They would be missing something very important if they could no longer get on the saddle.

Beyond the day

The 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships are planned to last beyond the event itself. They will leave a legacy for the city and canton of Zurich and for Switzerland as a whole.

Accompanying measures are to be used to exploit the charisma of the 2024 World Championships in order to support existing strategies of the City and Canton of Zurich, Swiss Cycling and other organisations with projects and activities in the areas of cycling and general sport promotion, as well as tourism before, during and after the event.

Züri Velo Cup launched as first accompanying measure

The Züri Velo Cup, initiated by the UCI Cycling and Para-Cycling Road World Championships Zurich 2024 on 11 May 2023 as the first accompanying measure, is the ultimate preparation and tune-up for next year’s major cycling event.
Motivated cyclists can pay tribute to the heroes of the country road on eleven iconic and cycling-historical segments such as the Regensberger between Pfannenstiel and the banks of the Rhine.

Para-cyclists can also complete the Züri Velo Cup. For this purpose, we have selected two segments that guarantee cycling fun, namely the “Flugpiste” and “Regensberg Nord”.

Guideline as a basis

The basis for the strategy is the guideline “Sustainability, Innovation and Legacy of Major Events” developed by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The city council and the Zurich cantonal government are aligning the staging of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships with these guidelines. The Zurich City Council has approved a partial credit of CHF 1,500,000 for the afore-mentioned accompanying measures. The cantonal government has also promised  funds to the same amount for such activities and projects from the cantonal non-profit fund and the sports fund. At the national level, the federal government supports accompanying measures in the area of sports promotion projects of Swiss Cycling in the amount of 1,500,000 Swiss francs.

A healthy body and mind on two wheels

Sporting activity has a positive influence on health. Pedalling strengthens the body and opens the mind to thoughts and ideas – of course always with the necessary attention to the environment and traffic.

Tailwind for cycling in the city and countryside

Numerous activities and projects such as the “City traffic 2025” programme or the “Cycling Masterplan” promote cycling as a healthy, environmentally friendly and efficient urban vehicle. The 2024 UCI Road Cycling World Championships will provide a tailwind for cycling in the city and canton of Zurich.

Talents for tomorrow

With the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships and the additional measures, the cycling clubs are to be strengthened and the population – regardless of club membership – is to be encouraged to take part in sport. For Swiss Cycling, the promotion of young participants is a particularly important topic throughout the country. Whether it’s a girl or a boy: those who gain their first experience on two wheels today may belong to the elite tomorrow.
