Zurich 2024 is proud to present the first five ambassadors for next year’s major inclusive cycling event. With UCI World Champions (team time trial – mixed relay) and Olympians Marlen Reusser and Stefan Küng as well as multiple UCI Para-cycling World Champion Flurina Rigling and paralympian Fabian Recher, the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships will gain additional charisma. The current quintet of ambassadors is completed by former UCI World Champion and Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara.

Further ambassadors from various sectors will be announced in the coming months.

«HAVING THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
IN SWITZERLAND IS A GREAT THING
FOR SWISS CYCLING AS A WHOLE

Fabian Cancellara is a former Swiss professional cyclist. Winner of two Olympic gold medals, four UCI World Individual Time Trial Championships and three titles in the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, he is considered one of the greatest cyclists in history.

After his career, Fabian entered the business world and founded his own company, Sette Sports AG. With his company, he owns and runs the Tudor Pro Cycling Team and also organises the Chasing Cancellara, a grassroots sporting event, among other things.

Marlen Reusser (1991) is a medical doctor and came relatively late to cycling, which she has turned into her current profession. She completed her medical studies in 2017 and obtained her first cycling licence. The successes were not long in coming. Two years later, she decided to give up her job as a surgical assistant doctor in order to dedicate herself to a professional career.

In 2021, she made her breakthrough as European champion, runner-up in the world championships and with a silver medal in the individual time trial at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In 2022 and 2023, she won the UCI World Championship title in the mixed relay time trials with the Swiss team.

In 2023, she won the individual time trial at the European Championships for the third time in a row and finished on the podium a total of 16 times that season, including overall victory in the Tour de Suisse.

«IT MAKES ME PROUD
TO PRESENT OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY
AND REPRESENT THESE
INCLUSIVE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.»

For Stefan Küng, cycling is romance. The interplay between man and machine, in which man can become machine, fascinated him even as a young boy, so much so that he caught the cycling bug. Now an established and successful professional cyclist, Küng (1993) strives for maximum performance, but still enjoys his job because cycling is also his passion. Stefan has been a professional since 2015 and rides for the Groupama-FDJ team. He describes himself as a rider for the classics and his favourite discipline, the time trial. His favourite races include Paris – Roubaix and the Tour de Suisse. Küng became world champion in the mixed relay time trial with the Swiss team in 2022 and 2023.

«I SEE THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE PARA-SPORT MORE PRESENT IN SOCIETY AND TO MAKE THE PERFORMANCES AND PROFESSIONALISM OF THE ATHLETES MORE VISIBLE.»

Flurina Rigling (1996) is a multiple UCI World Champion in Para-cycling on the road and on the track. The versatile rider lives in Hedingen in the canton of Zurich. After graduating from high school, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in political and environmental sciences at the University of Zurich. In 2023, she completed the elite sports basic military training in Magglingen as a recruit and is currently studying for a master’s degree in political science. Flurina is just as fascinated by medical and sporting aspects and nature as she is by politics and current world events. She has had a handicap in both hands and feet since birth. The lack of the four rays on her hands and feet means that the multiple world champion is limited in her ability to grip and is also unable to use her calf muscles.

«CROSSING THE SAME FINISH LINE AS ALL CYCLISTS
IS AN IMPORTANT STEP TOWARDS INCLUSION.»

Fabian Recher (1999) from the Bernese Oberland is outstanding in more ways than one. In 2021, the young hand cyclist, who is world-class in his MH4 handbike category, made his international breakthrough. Despite his young age, he has already won various awards. He received the Panathlon Award, was voted “Spiez Sportsman of the Year” by his fellow citizens and was named “Newcomer of the Year 2021” by Swiss Paralympic. In his career to date, Fabian, who suffers from an open back, has already rolled to medals several times, including at the 2021 European Championships in Austria and the 2021 World Championships in Estoril, where he won bronze in both cases. Recher, who is a qualified businessman, was the first Swiss para athlete to complete basic military training for top sports people in the army in 2021/2022.
