Sustainability

Our Vision

The 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships will be an unforgettable sporting event that will set standards in social integration and equality, increase the popularity of cycling as a sustainable means of sport and transport and promote Zurich as an attractive cycling region.

Our sustainability concept is based on our vision and on the NIV guidelines (Sustainability & Innovation = Legacy) of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. It is orientated towards the sustainability dimensions of environment, society, economy and management.

Goals

We integrate the four dimensions of sustainability into all areas of the event and its lasting accompanying measures (legacy projects). We drive innovative ideas and leave a positive legacy.

Mobility

  • We promote the bicycle as a means of sport and transport.
  • We are establishing Zurich as an ambassador for cycling in everyday life and thus contributing to Zurich’s climate goals.

Climate and environmental protection

  • We protect the ecosystem as far as we can and use existing and reusable infrastructure wherever possible.
  • We focus on renewable energies and energy efficiency.

Waste management

  • We do not use any non-essential materials and favour systematic recycling.

Materials & Products

  • We produce as much as necessary, as little as possible and observe the principle of the circular economy
  • We focus on local suppliers, regional products and an attractive veggie range.

Tourism & location promotion

  • We are strengthening Zurich’s image as a (cycling) tourism destination, business and knowledge centre.
  • We inspire our guests with our hospitality and celebrate Zurich with Sechseläutenplatz and the fan zones as a vibrant centre.

Involvement of SMEs

  • We create a platform for the involvement and participation of interested regional SMEs and favour regional and local providers.

Ethics & Integrity

  • We act ethically and with integrity in compliance with legal requirements

Transparency & disclosure

  • We review, evaluate and publicise the impact of the event on the environment, society and the economy.

Inclusion & diversity

  • We are setting new standards in social inclusion and equality at major sporting events in Switzerland.
  • We raise awareness of para-sport and campaign for its integration.

Sports & health promotion
