Barrier-free Accessibility

The 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships are taking place under the motto "Together We Ride". We are not only focussing on the athletes. We are organising a cycling festival for everyone. We attach great importance to making our event as accessible as possible. This page is constantly being updated with information to make access as easy as possible for people with disabilities. So check back here regularly.

ZURICH 2024 without barriers

The finish line for all riders is at Sechseläutenplatz in the centre of Zurich. Sechseläutenplatz is the centre for athletes and fans. There are other fan zones around it: on Bürkliplatz, General-Guisan-Quai, Limmatquai and Münsterhof. You can find an overview of the fan zones here.

There are so-called hosted areas in the “Sechseläutenplatz” and “Bürkliplatz” fan zones. These are designed to be as barrier-free as possible. You can move freely around the entire site. But you can also join in the excitement anywhere along the race route. There are various starting locations for the races. You can find information on the racecourses under this link and on the schedule and race programme here.

Where are there car parks for people with disabilities?
There are a limited number of parking spaces for people with disabilities in the Hohe Promenade car park, in the immediate vicinity of the competition site. These can only be used with the appropriate parking permit. The fan zone and the competition site are approximately 200 metres from the multi-storey car park.

Is public transport barrier-free?
You can find general information on barrier-free travelling with the ZVV on ZVV - Obstacle-free travel. Particularly useful are the network maps, information on connection enquiries and information on the shuttle service.

The SBB Contact Centre Handicap for people with reduced mobility can be reached via this link. Contact Centre Handicap provides information about barrier-free travel on public transport and coordinates free boarding and alighting assistance for people with reduced mobility.

Winterthur Grüze and Winterthur Töss are the only railway stations in the vicinity of a route (Men's Elite - Zurich 2024) that are not obstacle-free.

The replacement stops and buses in Gossau ZH are not always obstacle-free. Further clarifications regarding the diversions will be made as soon as these have been finalised.

In relation to the Zurich Münsterhof fan zone, boarding and alighting at the "Zürich, Paradeplatz" tram stop requires assistance from drivers (no advance booking). If you want to get on/off independently, you can use the neighbouring stops "Rennweg" and "Kantonalbank".

How do I get to the event by public transport?
It is best to travel via Zurich main station or directly to Stadelhofen station. Stadelhofen station is only a few metres away from the finish area and the fan zones. You can find a photo story for travelling from Zurich main station to Stadelhofen on this page under “How to get there”.

Is there a photo story for the journey?
Yes. You can find photo stories from Zurich main station to Stadelhofen on this page under "How to get there".

Is there an event plan with the fan zones available for download
The exact visualisation and signalling can only be carried out once the planning of the fan zones has been completed. As soon as we have the event plan, we will link it here. https://zurich2024.com/en/tickets/

What are the bus stops near the competition site at Sechseläutenplatz?
The best way to get to Sechseläutenplatz during the event is via Stadelhofen station. This information can already be accessed via the ZVV online timetable: https://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/home.html.

Are there special timetables during the World Cup?
Yes, these timetables, which also include diversions and adjustments to network operations, can be accessed from the beginning of August at https://www.zvv.ch/zvv/en/home.html . In any case, you should check the current connections online before starting your journey. From 7.00 p.m. onwards, trams and buses will once again run according to the usual timetable. The SBB trains, the S-Bahn and the Forchbahn will run according to the usual timetables.

Accessibility

Are the starting locations Winterthur, Gossau ZH, Uster and Oerlikon accessible?

Winterthur: The route to the start and the festival site in Winterthur are barrier-free. Wheelchair-accessible toilets are available in the Schützenwiesenstadion Sector C. As the existing infrastructure of the Schützenwiese stadium will be used as much as possible for reasons of sustainability, wheelchair accessibility to the public viewing cannot be guaranteed at present - a solution is being worked on and will be communicated again here.

The start/festival site in Winterthur is easily accessible by public transport. There will be no event car parks available and travelling by public transport is recommended. Please note that the Winterthur Grüze and Winterthur Töss railway stations are not barrier-free. There is also a shuttle for people with disabilities from the car park at the ice rink in Wetzikon to the festival grounds. There will be car park attendants at the ice rink in Wetzikon who can be approached if you need a shuttle bus. They will then coordinate and organise the journey accordingly. The alternative bus stops and buses in Gossau ZH are not always barrier-free. Further clarifications regarding the diversions will be made as soon as they have been finalised. Further information about the starting point in Gossau ZH can be found under this link: https://www.gossau-zh.ch/rad-wm-2024/start-und-festgelaende/

Declaration on Accessibility

Declaration on
Accessibility
at the UCI Cycling and Para-Cycling Road World Championships Zurich 2024

The 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich aim to set new standards for both social and cycling inclusion and equality. To achieve this goal, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) Zurich 2024 has set out in its Sustainability Charter to make the World Championships accessible for all participants and spectators.

  1. Information: Under the link zurich2024.com/barrierefreiheit all information relevant to accessibility is available at the click of a mouse.

The Crimer concert on the opening day will take place with sign language interpreters.

  1. "Sounding Board": We set up a sounding board of people with different disabilities to advise LOC Zurich 2024. This group was instrumental in understanding the different needs and developing solutions.

  2. Collaboration with experts: We are working with Sitios, the Swiss Accessibility Association, to check the infrastructure around and in the fan zones for accessibility, document it and make it available on the ginto app. In terms of digital accessibility, the LOC is advised by the Apfelschule, an association of blind and visually impaired people, and supported in the implementation of improvement measures.

  1. Access to the event / fan zones in the city of Zurich. All locations where the competitions take place are wheelchair accessible. There are ramps, lifts and wide doors. Persons with a disabled parking permit can park for a fee in the Messe Zürich multi-storey car park. From there, a shuttle will take them to the Congress Centre.

In the Sechseläutenplatz and Bürkliplatz fan zones, there are so-called "hosted areas" that are reserved for people with disabilities and their carers. For example, there are special seats with a good view of the competition or the stage.

  1. Digital accessibility
We do everything we can to make our website as accessible as possible. We are constantly working to improve the user experience. Despite our commitment to ensuring that our information is as digitally accessible as possible, we cannot fully cover all areas because, among other things, we also provide third-party content, i.e. links and platforms from third-party providers.

  2. Restrictions on accessibility / barrier-free access
We are aware that we cannot take all needs into account in all programme items and areas and that there are already known "inaccessibilities":
  • the eventwide provision of sign language interpreters
  • All content in simple language
  • Subtitling
  • Audio description

  1. Responsible persons in the Local Organising Committee:
Tobias Fankhauser, Senior Manager Para-Cycling, and Fabienne Dirksen, Sustainability, are the contact persons. A hotline will be set up during the World Championships (see FAQ).
