A year ago, we lost Muriel Furrer, a young Swiss athlete who had her whole life and career ahead of her. Her tragic accidental death left us deeply shocked and stunned. Zurich 2024 remembers Muriel today, together with her family, relatives and friends, and the global cycling community.

We remain deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Muriel at the UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich, which she had been looking forward to so much. The Local Organising Committee Zurich 2024 mourns with the Furrer family, Muriel’s relatives and friends, and the cycling community.

A memorial service for Muriel will be held at the Uster Reformed Church on 8 November.

Memorial Ride instead of the City Race

The City Race planned for Sunday, 29 September 2024 will not take place. Instead, there will be a guided Memorial Ride in memory of Muriel Furrer. Participation is free of charge. In addition, a central place of mourning will be set up at the Wasserkirche in Zurich.

Following the tragic death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer, the Local Organising Committee of the UCI Cycling and Para-Cycling Road World Championships Zurich 2024 (LOC), in consultation with the International Cycling Union (UCI), Swiss Cycling and Muriel’s family, has decided to hold a Memorial Ride instead of the planned City Race.

The Memorial Ride is open to anyone who, together with the LOC, the UCI and Swiss Cycling, would like to support and comfort Muriel’s family, friends and the entire cycling community in these difficult hours. Participation is free of charge.

The start time will be brought forward to 7.15 am due to the slower pace. Participants can gather at Bellevue after the start/finish area from 7 am. According to the race programme, the handbike road race in the MH4 category will then open the official race day.

Ticket holders of the City Race can choose whether they would like to have the purchase price refunded by Ticketmaster or whether this amount should be used as a contribution to the youth activities of the Swiss Sports Aid Foundation, the main charity partner of the World Championships, and Swiss Cycling.

Muriel Furrer

It is with great sadness that the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the Organising Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships in Zurich (Switzerland) today learned the tragic news of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer.

Muriel Furrer sadly passed away today at Zurich University Hospital.

The UCI and the Organising Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships offer their sincere condolences to Muriel Furrer’s family, friends and her Federation Swiss Cycling.
Muriel Furrer’s family ask that their privacy be respected at this very painful time.

Whether in the fan zones in the city or along the routes, there are numerous ‘spots’ where you can experience the race atmosphere and the athletes ‘up close’ and get the best view of them.

Depending on what you are in the mood for, you can enjoy the race either a little further away on the route or on the big screen surrounded by other fans in the fan zones such as Bürkliplatz or Münsterhof, where you can also find great food and numerous spectacular shows and events. If you want to see the cyclists cross the finish line, it’s best to stand near Tiefbrunnen.

An overview of the fan zones and the programme can be found here. The Sechseläutenplatz, the only fan zone where a ticket is required, is sold out for the coming weekend.
The interactive map on SRF online gives you valuable insider tips along the routes.

For the start of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships Zurich on 21 September, the Canton and City of Zurich and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) Zurich 2024 are launching a cooperative traffic management system for the global event together with Viasuisse.

Cooperative traffic management is intended to ensure the flow of traffic on the roads around the race routes during the Cycling Road World Championships. The aim is to provide road users with digitalised information on closures, diversions and other measures via navigation service providers, such as for example Here, TomTom, Apple Maps, Waze, Google Maps to guide you efficiently to your destination.

As numerous visitors from Switzerland and abroad will be travelling by car or other motor vehicles in addition to the local population, information must be sent to all navigation devices and radio stations promptly and up to date. In addition, the targeted recording of road closures enables optimised planning and coordination with other road traffic-related events such as roadworks and events, which can also have an impact on the flow of traffic.

This pilot project, which the canton and city of Zurich and LOC Zurich 2024 are organising together with Viasuisse and the Berlin-based company Prisma, aims to reduce emissions and potential traffic jams to an absolute minimum. The TRAFF-X® system used for this purpose also helps to optimise communication within the canton and the cities and municipalities concerned. Viasuisse is established as a national competence centre for traffic information and is accepted by all relevant stakeholders such as the Federal Roads Office, the police and the media.

Public transport: consult the ZVV online timetable before travelling

During the UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships, a special public transport timetable will be available online. The best connections will be available in real time via the ZVV timetable or the ZVV app.

Public transport travellers are strongly recommended to use these sources of information before starting their journey. The current public transport connections can also be accessed via Google Maps.

No 24-hour closures – pedestrian crossings largely possible

The closure times for the individual racecourses and the associated adjustments to the traffic organisation vary depending on the race day, race programme and municipality. An overview of the detailed routes and closure times can be found on the GIS browser of the Canton of Zurich: https://maps.zh.ch/?topic=KapoRadWMZH.

The roads will be open and passable again from 7pm at the latest on all race days, with the exception of Seefeldquai and neighbouring parts of Mainaustrasse and Feldeggstrasse.

Crossing the championships routes is possible on foot or by bike, which must be pushed. As usual, the roads must be crossed with the necessary caution. In areas of the racecourse that are secured with barriers, crossing is permitted at specially designated points and in accordance with the instructions of the route marshals or security personnel.

From Zurich, for Zurich, for everyone and for inclusive cycling: the UCI Road and Para-Cycling World Championships Zurich 2024 invites volunteers, partners, delegates, cycling fans and the people of Zurich to the opening of the global cycling event at Sechseläutenplatz on Saturday, 21 September.

With this initiative, the Local Organising Committee Zurich 2024 wants to share the historic kick-off to the first fully inclusive and integrative Road and Para-Cycling World Championships. The beginning of this event is all about inclusion – with the opening ceremony, the mixed handbike team relay of the para-cyclists, and the concert of Crimer, which will be translated into sign language.

For security reasons, entry without a ticket will not be permitted. The number of free tickets is limited, so get in quick while stocks last. A maximum of four tickets will be issued per person collecting, so that a family of four, for example, can attend together.

The free tickets can be collected at the main entrance to the Sechseläutenplatz fan zone on Theaterstrasse (at the Collana Bar) from the opening of the fan zone at 12 noon. They only entitle the holder to enter the fan zone on this race day and do not include any of the additional services provided with the regular Fan Experience Weekend tickets, which are still available from Ticketmaster and cover the exciting World Cup Sunday with the big time trial.
